What is the Burn Academy?
Fire Performance (also known as fire dancing) is defined as an individual or group of performance artist(s) who utilize a form of object manipulation involving tools (poi, batons, staves, hoops, fans, etc..) which are lit on fire.
Los Angeles County is currently home to several highly organized and professional Fire Performance Troupes. As our industry grows and becomes more sophisticated, a shortage of appropriate and legally permitted practice spaces has become apparent.
The Los Angeles Burn Academy has several objectives. First and foremost is to work with the City of Long Beach and local Fire Marshals to secure and oversee a legally permitted and insured weekly practice area for use by Los Angeles County Fire Performers. Other objectives include fostering a spirit of mentorship between highly trained Fire Performance Artists and those new to the Fire Arts, providing Fire Safety Education, Training, and an overview of the Permitting Process, as well as promoting the sharing of knowledge, skill sets, and choreographies. Last but not least, we are an open registry Fire Conclave, allowing fire performers of all skill levels a chance to perform inside the Great Circle at Burning Man.
A formal written proposal was submitted to the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine on April 27, 2009. We are working together with Long Beach Fire Marshal Matt Doberpuhl in a concerted effort to secure El Dorado Park as a fully permitted and insured practice area for Fire Performers. The proposal is currently under review by Carl Southwell with the Long Beach Risk Management Bureau. We will keep you updated on our progress.
