Fire Performance (also known as fire dancing) can be defined as an individual (or group of) performance artist(s) who utilize a form of object manipulation involving props such as poi, batons, staves, hoops, fans, etc..., which are lit on fire and exhibited as a form of self expression - typically through the mediums of dance, theatrics, or martial arts.
Los Angeles County is currently home to several highly organized and professional Fire Performance Troupes and Production Companies. As our industry continues to grow and becomes more sophisticated, a shortage of appropriate and legally permitted practice spaces has become apparent.
The Los Angeles Burn Academy is an organization dedicated towards the promotion of the Fire Performance Arts and Fire Safety Education. Our mission includes:
- Working with the City of Long Beach’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine and Fire Marshals to secure and oversee a legally permitted and insured weekly practice area for use by Los Angeles County Fire Performers.
- Providing Fire Performance Lessons in collaboration with the City of Long Beach.
- Providing Fire Safety Education and Training in collaboration with the United Fire Artists, a non-profit organization who developed Fire Safety Guidelines, Fire Marshal Checklists, and Fire Performance Permit Applications which are utilized by California State, City and County Fire Marshals.
- Fostering a spirit of mentorship between highly trained Fire Performance Artists and those new to the Fire Arts.
- Ppromoting the sharing of knowledge, skill sets, and choreographies.
- Establishing an open registry Fire Conclave, which allows fire performers of all skill levels a chance to perform inside the Great Circle at Burning Man.
