Welcome to the Burn Academy!


This portion of the Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach has been secured by the Burn Academy as a legally permitted and insured practice space for fire performance artists.


In addition to offering a weekly fire practice space, the Burn Academy also provides fire spinning lessons through the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine in Long Beach:

This space is also home to the Burn Academy Fire Conclave, a performance troupe dedicated to spinning within the Great Circle at Burning Man.

Your attendance at the Burn Academy signifies your acceptance of the following Rules, as well as your compliance in helping to enforce them:


• This Organization adheres to the California State Fire Marshal approved United Fire Artists Safety Guidelines. These guidelines will be enforced at all times. To review these guidelines, click here:  http://www.unitedfireartists.org/download.html

• All fuel(s) shall be taken to the Holding Area immediately upon arrival at Colorado Lagoon, and returned directly to your car upon leaving.  When not in use, all fuel(s) should be in appropriate containers.

• All Flame Effect Devices, safety equipment and personal belongings shall be stored in an organized fashion outside of the Hazard Area.  

• Each Fire Performer/group of Fire Performers must secure an appropriate number of Flame Effects Assistants for the amount of flame effects being utilized.

• Each performer is responsible to bring their own fuel and fire safety equipment.  Fire Extinguishers will be provided by the Burn Academy.

• After fueling, please spin off all Flame Effect Devices (as applicable) in the designated area.

• There is absolutely no smoking allowed in the Holding Area or Hazard Area.  Please adhere to all “NO SMOKING” signs wherever posted.

 

• Burn Academy personnel have the right to prohibit any fuel(s), chemical additives, or Flame Effect Devices they deem to be inappropriate or unduly harmful to others.

• Burn Academy personnel have the right to prohibit anyone from lighting up whom we deem to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

• Burn Academy is not responsible for belongings that are lost, forgotten, damaged, or otherwise misplaced.

• Participants of the Burn Academy agree to hold the Burn Academy, Trick Concepts, and the United Fire Artists free of any liability for injuries and/or deaths sustained while taking part in any activities therein.   

• This is a “leave no trace” weekly event.

Definitions:

 

Fire Performer:  An entertainer, other performer, or group who performs for an audience using flame effect devices.

 

Flame Effect Devices: Manually operated devices without the use of an automatic control system.  These devices utilize the combustion of flammable liquids or solids to produce thermal, physical, visual, or audible phenomena before an audience (examples – fire staff, fire hoop, fire fans, etc., or any otherwise hand-held open flame effect that has the illusion of danger).

 

Flame Effect Assistants:  A person or group who works under the direction and supervision of the fire performer and/or overseeing organization (examples – fire safety personnel, crowd control personnel, etc.)

 

Hazard Area:  The area made hazardous by the operation of a flame effect.

 

Holding Area:  An area where flame effect devices and/or materials related to the operation of flame effect devices are held prior to use (example – fuel station, spin out area, etc.).
